Ingredients needed to make philly cheesesteak in the slow cooker
  • Stew beef – any cut works as long as you dice it into bite sized pieces. Stew beef is economical and perfect for this recipe!
  • Peppers and onion – Using frozen simply saves on time required to wash and cut all the veggies, but you can use fresh if that’s what you have available.
  • Low-sodium Beef Broth – I prefer using it in cooking as it contains less salt than regular beef broth.
  • Au jus mix – You will need a packet to give the sauce its delicious taste.
  • Provolone cheese – A Philly cheesesteak classic, but can be substituted with your favorite cheese.
  • Fresh chopped parsley for garnish.

Tips For Making Crockpot Philly Cheesesteak Sandwiches

  • Serve over thick slices of Italian bread, rice, mashed potatoes, or noodles.
  • Keep an eye on the slow cooker as every slow cooker cooks at a different rate, if the sauce starts to thicken before the meat is done add a splash of water.
  • If you end up with too much sauce, discard a little.
  • For a little kick, add a jar of sliced jalapenos to the Crockpot.

How to Serve Crock Pot Philly Cheesesteak

The most popular option is a sandwich! Serve in a long crusty and sturdy roll, I like hoagie rolls and French baguettes. If you can find Amoroso rolls, these are perfect for Philly cheesesteaks! Or simply slice a baguette and make an open-faced sandwich.

Other delicious options for serving are rice, noodles, or mashed potatoes for a complete meal.

Recipe FAQs

What type of meat or steak should I use for Crock Pot Philly Cheesesteak?

I used stew meat and cooked it until it was tender. If you want a nicer option that is also more expensive, go for thinly sliced sirloin or ribeye steak.

Can I make Crock Pot Philly Cheesesteak with chicken or ground beef?

Yes! Just replace the meat with chicken or ground beef. Ground turkey would also work here.

Do I need to pre-cook the peppers and onions before adding them to the Crock Pot?

No, you don’t. Add fresh or frozen peppers and onions to the slow cooker, and they will cook as the dish is being slowly simmered until perfection.

What type of cheese should I use for Crock Pot Philly Cheesesteak?

Provolone cheese is the most popular choice for this dish, but you can also use Swiss, cheddar, or mozzarella cheese.

Can I freeze leftovers from Crock Pot Philly Cheesesteak?

You can freeze any leftovers in an airtight container for up to 2-3 months. Thaw completely and reheat in the microwave or on the stove until warm and serve.

Philly cheese steak sandwich is an easy weeknight dinner recipe made of thinly sliced steak topped with melted cheese, served on crisped bread. Veggies are added for more nutrients and flavor. And the best part is that the slow cooker does all the work for you while you are busy with other stuff. I hope that you love this recipe as much as I do!
