Easy Slow Cooker French Onion Chicken is made so simple with just a few ingredients. It’s a dump-and-start recipe that you can make on busy weekdays to feed the whole family!

I love using kitchen gadgets to make my life easier, so I’m always ready to serve my family a tasty homemade meal even on the busiest days. The Slow Cooker has been a lifesaver for me lately, I start it in the morning or afternoon, to find a delicious meal ready by dinnertime!

Key Ingredients
- Chicken: I’m using skinless and boneless chicken breasts, but chicken thighs can also be used if desired.
- Canned Soup: I love this shortcut ingredient! I’m using a can of condensed French Onion Soup by Campbell’s.
- Onion Soup Mix: You will need a packet of dry onion soup mix for extra flavor.
- Cheese: I went for Swiss cheese but any melty cheese works. Try Gruyere (it’s delicious in French onion soup!), provolone, mozzarella, Gouda, or Jarlsberg cheese.

How To Make Crock Pot French Onion Chicken
- Spray an 8-quart slow cooker with nonstick spray before laying the ingredients.
- Add chicken to the slow cooker, followed by sliced onion, French onion soup mix, and sprinkle onion soup mix.
- Give everything a quick stir, cover with the lid, and cook on high for 3-4 hours or on low for 6 hours.
- 15 minutes before done, sprinkle the crispy fried onions if using, and add a slice of provolone cheese on top of each chicken breast. Cover, and cook for 15 more minutes.
- Serve with a garnish of chopped fresh parsley over cooked noodles, rice, or mashed potatoes.
Recipe Tips
- If you have time, for extra flavor brown the sliced yellow onion and the chicken before adding to the slow cooker. This is an extra step that is optional, but adds a yummy flavor to the chicken.
- Use a mix of onions: I used one large yellow onion, but a combination of sweet onions such as Vidalia and yellow onions can give the dish a more complex flavor.
- You can shred the chicken if you prefer. It will absorb more sauce, and will be great on noodles, mashed potatoes, rice, or in sandwiches.
Recipe FAQs
Yes, you can use boneless and skinless chicken thighs instead just make sure to trim off any extra fat.
It’s not recommended to use frozen chicken in slow cooker recipes as it can cause the chicken to cook unevenly and increase the risk of foodborne illness. Thaw the chicken in the refrigerator overnight before cooking.
It’s not necessary to stir the ingredients, but you can give them a gentle stir halfway through the cooking time to ensure even cooking.
What To Serve With
I love to serve this chicken over cooked noodles or mashed potatoes, but a side of rice would also be delicious to soak up all of the delicious sauce. Or if the time allows it, bake your own homemade breadsticks, they are to die for!
