Why This Recipe Works

  • Easy – this is an easy recipe that requires only 7 ingredients and 15 minutes of your precious time to make it.
  • Pretty – peppermint pie is beautifully decorated with whipped topping and garnished with crushed candy canes. But you can decorate it differently using other shades of food coloring and different extract and pudding flavors, so it matched your special occasion.
  • Great to make ahead – we all know how busy one gets during the holiday season. To save time, simply make the pie ahead and store in the fridge for at least 4 hours; the time you need to prepare the main dish or sides.
  • No-bake – as this is a no-bake pie, you don’t need to warm your kitchen up to cook it. This helps saving some energy!

Ingredients

Here are the only 7 ingredients that you need to make this no-bake holiday dessert:

Ingredients needed to make a peppermint pie
  • Crust – store-bought chocolate oreo pie crust is great for this recipe. However, you can substitute it with a traditional graham cracker crust or with a chocolate graham cracker crust based on your preference and what you can find in the supermarket.
  • Pudding mix – use white chocolate instant pudding mix and not “cook and serve” pudding for this recipe.
  • Milk – use your favorite milk here.
  • Peppermint extract – make sure to use peppermint extract and not mint extract.
  • Whipped topping – divide it into 2 portions as part of it will be used as a topping while the other part will be mixed with the pudding so it reaches the right consistency.
  • Candy canes – crush the candy canes or peppermint candies to garnish the pie.
  • Red food coloring – you’ll need a generous amount of red food coloring to make this pie.

How To Make a Peppermint Pie

Make the filling:

  • Mix pudding: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together pudding mixes and milk, until well combined.
  • Flavor: Add peppermint extract, and whisk to combine.
  • Color: Add a generous amount of red food coloring, and whisk to incorporate.
  • Fold: Fold in about 1 cup of the whipped topping carefully until it combines. If needed, you can add a bit more red food coloring at this point to get your desired shade for the pie filling, but be careful not to overstir or the cream will deflate.
  • Fill pie crust: Pour the filling into the pie crust and smooth it out using a spatula.
  • Chill: Cover it with a plastic wrap and move to the refrigerator to chill for at least 4 hours.
  • Top and decorate: Before serving, add the remaining whipped topping to a piping bag fitted with a 1M open star tip. Pipe it in single swirls all the way around the outer edge of the pie. Finish with sprinkling crushed candy canes inside of your whipped topping border.

Tips For Making Peppermint Pie

  • Chill – allow the pie to chill in the refrigerator for at least 4 hours before serving. This makes the pudding firmer and easier to cut and serve.
  • Clean slices – it’s important to clean the knife between slices with warm water and dry it with a towel. This gives you clean pie slices.
  • Crushed candy – to crush candy canes or peppermint candies, simply place them in a ziploc bag and crush using a rolling pin.

FAQs

How to store Peppermint Pie?

Keep the pie refrigerated until ready to be served. If you end up having any remaining pie, cover it with cling film and keep in the fridge for up to 3 days.

What To Serve With

This delicious pie is great on it’s own. Serve it for any occasion. I usually make it for Thanksgiving, holiday parties and potluck desserts. Everybody loves it!
