Easy Slow Cooker French Onion Chicken is made so simple with just a few ingredients. It's a dump-and-start recipe that you can make on busy weekdays to feed the whole family!
2-3slicessliced cheesego for provolone, Swiss, gruyere, or mozzarella
French fried onionsoptional
Parsleyoptional
Instructions
Spray an 8-quart slow cooker with nonstick spray before laying the ingredients.
Add chicken to the slow cooker, followed by sliced onion, French onion soup mix, and sprinkle onion soup mix.
Give everything a quick stir, cover with the lid, and cook on high for 3-4 hours or on low for 6 hours.
15 minutes before done, sprinkle the crispy fried onions if using, and add a slice of provolone cheese on top of each chicken breast. Cover, and cook for 15 more minutes.
Serve with a garnish of chopped fresh parsley over cooked noodles, rice, or mashed potatoes.
Notes
If you have time, for extra flavor brown the sliced yellow onion and the chicken before adding to the slow cooker. This is an extra step that is optional, but adds a yummy flavor to the chicken.
Use a mix of onions: I used one large yellow onion, but a combination of sweet onions such as Vidalia and yellow onions can give the dish a more complex flavor.
You can shred the chicken if you prefer. It will absorb more sauce, and will be great on noodles, mashed potatoes, rice, or in sandwiches.
